The Welsh Poems might also be called Selected Experimental Poems and highlights Finch's more unusual excursions into verbal and visual trickery. The book covers work written over a period of two decades and is the first such large-scale selection of his work.

Finch's work, famous since the seventies for its fringe dwelling, its boundary pushing and its innovation, has always veered wildly between the conventional and the experimental. Indeed, as one of the early second generation British concretists, it is remarkable that Finch also made a name for himself as first an upsetter among the Anglo-Welsh and, later, a poet working pretty much near the middle of that canon.

In The Welsh Poems Finch collects the best of his innovative work since Antibodies . Here are the post-Cobbing pieces, the extended permutationals, the web poems, the findings, the bendings, and the meldings that have kept him out there in the ante-room for so long a time.

Since the early 1970s, Finch has been the principal innovator in Welsh poetry.....he deserves a Welsh knighthood.
Richard Kostelanetz, Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes

For 40 years he has been the Welsh avant-garde, as inventive and as indispensable as he has been consistently undervalued and ignored.....one of the few Welsh writers capable of entrancing young students with his verbal chutzpah, his Crazy Gang of words. Henffych, Peter: a hir oes eto i'ch egni ac i'ch dawn.
